The Diamond Development Initiative International, known as DDI, is a non-profit organization registered in Canada and the United States. Through education, political dialogue and projects that promote the direct involvement of artisanal diamond miners and their communities, DDI is attempting to show that diamonds can be an asset for economic growth in countries in which they were formerly at the forefront of conflict and can serve as a catalyst for personal and national development.
In order to bring about changes to the alluvial diamond mining sector in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), DDI initiated a program in February 2011 to register all players involved in the diamond trade. In addition to registration, the program also aims to introduce a system to track the production of diamonds from the mine to the point of export. This program represents an important step toward formalizing the artisanal diamond mining sector, promoting the security of the sector, as well as increasing tax revenues through progressive reduction of illicit diamond mining.
Registration data collected manually, is entered into a custom-designed database which also captures, geographic, demographic and socioeconomic information on mine operators. The project aims to map artisanal diamond mining for the pilot zones of the two Kasaï provinces. The mapping would help guide diggers toward artisanal diamond mining zones designated by the Mining Cadastre.
